You’ve selected a builder and are confident you can partner with them on this significant journey to home ownership. You’ve even narrowed the floor plan to the design that best suits your needs. Now what? You’ve conquered the big decisions, but the planning gets real here. Several important areas should never be overlooked, including your closets and storage space.
Closets and Storage Considerations
No homeowner has ever regretted including ample space for closets and storage in their home. A good rule is to plan for what you think you’ll need and add a bit more.
1. DOUBLE-HUNG RODS
Ensure there is room for double-hung rods for shirts, shorter items, and space to accommodate long clothes.
2. MUDROOM CUPBOARD
Install a cupboard or pantry in a mudroom or laundry room to hide brooms, central vac hoses, and cleaning items.
3. ENTRYWAY CUBBIES
Install cubbies in a mudroom or entryway for small storage.
BATHROOM STORAGE
Use a pony wall in a bathroom for additional storage.
4. ISLAND CUPBOARDS
Use either end of a kitchen island for cupboard space.
5. BUILT-IN CONVENIENCES
Include small conveniences like a built-in paper towel holder or a pull-out garbage/laundry/recycling bin.
6. DRAWER EFFICIENCY
Consider drawers for lower cupboards to increase the efficient use of space.
Properly planning closets and storage areas can increase your enjoyment of your home. Organizing the day-to-day clutter will also prevent it from becoming overwhelming.
